Ask the Home Economist
Q. Are there pesticide residues in wine?
A. That’s a good question. Grapes are not usually washed before they are crushed for wine making because washing the grapes, wine makers say, inhibits the wine making process. But all the many wine makers I asked assured me that spraying is stopped well in advance of harvesting the grapes to allow pesticides and fungicides to break down into natural, harmless compounds.
Other questions included in the column…..
Q. Are there any vitamins or minerals in a glass of wine?
Q. Does a glass of wine count as a serving of fruit?

Q. What can I do with my empty wine bottles?
